That this House congratulates sporting hero Julie Fleeting on her induction to the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame; recognises Julie’s exceptional achievements as a professional footballer, having won 17 major trophies with Arsenal, 121 caps for Scotland, and being the first Scot to play as a full-time professional in the US women’s game; notes that Julie also represented Scotland in basketball and was awarded an MBE in 2008; admires Julie’s talent as a professional footballer, which has seen her star for teams such as Ross County, Arsenal, Celtic and Valur, as well as her native team Kilwinning; praises her many years of service to North Ayrshire as a physical education teacher at Auchenharvie Academy, Stevenston, where she has been teaching since 2008; and understands that Julie’s incredible career is a testament to her remarkable determination, skill, and commitment to sport.

Defence Equipment and Support Beith

That this House is aware that workers at Defence Equipment and Support (DE and S) at Beith in North Ayrshire, an arm’s length body of the Ministry of Defence, are continuing strike action for improved pay and conditions; notes that this strike action is unprecedented, the first in the history of that organisation, and backed by 93 per cent of members; is concerned to hear that non-craft workers preparing arms for shipment at the depot, face discrimination in the payment of bonuses, relative to craft workers who assemble munitions; rejects the fact that retention payments are made to managers and craft workers, while non-craft colleagues earning less than £21,000 a year have been excluded from retention bonuses; understands that the operation of the facility is vital in ensuring the uninterrupted supply of equipment to UK armed forces and the Ukrainian frontline as it fights to protect its territorial integrity and freedom in the face of Russian aggression; is mindful of the fact that the striking workers have not undertaken this action lightly; believes it is essential to stand with these workers who reject a two-tier workforce and support their action for a fairer and more equal working environment where the work of all those at DE and S is respected and recognised with a bonus scheme which is fair to all workers at the site; and calls on the Ministry of Defence to urgently intervene to ensure a fair resolution to the industrial dispute.

Royal Mail industrial action

That this House fully supports the more than 100,000 postal workers at Royal Mail engaging in strike action in an ongoing dispute over pay and conditions; notes the £758 million in profit made by Royal Mail in the financial year 2021-2022, an increase of £56 million from the previous financial year; acknowledges that the hard work and dedication of Royal Mail’s workforce has heavily contributed towards the organisation’s yearly profits; values the essential work carried out by Royal Mail staff across the UK; denounces Royal Mail’s intentions to cut 10,000 jobs by August 2023, including 6,000 redundancies; urges Royal Mail to negotiate a fairer deal to better support their workforce now and in the future; and wishes Royal Mail workers every success in their fight for better pay and conditions.

Royal DSM Bovaer manufacturing facility, Dalry

That this House celebrates the recent ground-breaking ceremony at Royal DSM’s Bovaer manufacturing facility in Dalry, carried out by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon MSP; understands that Bovaer is a unique methane-reducing feed additive, which can reduce emissions by 30 per cent in dairy cows and 45 per cent in beef cattle; believes that reducing atmospheric methane is a crucial step in keeping global warming below the 1.5 degrees Celsius outlined in the Paris Agreement; further understands that 30 November 2022 marked the beginning of the facility’s construction, following the announcement of DSM’s £100 million investment, backed by a £12 million grant from the Scottish Government during COP26 in 2021; congratulates DSM for delivering what it considers a unique project, with Dalry chosen from plants across the world, a tribute to the skills and commitment of the Ayrshire workforce; is heartened by reports that employee numbers will rise to 400 at Dalry, with a further 150 contractors over the 30-month construction phase, while boosting the supply chain; considers that this development shows Scotland’s leadership in tackling the climate emergency and meeting the 2030 pledge to cut methane emissions by at least 30 per cent by 2030; and wishes DSM and its workforce the best in delivering what it sees as this exciting and globally significant project.

ARDEER BOWLING CLUB, STEVENSTON

That this House commends Ardeer Bowling Club for its recent purchase and installation of a Defibrillator; recognises that the club raised funding for the purchase through the generous Donations of Members, local organisations and fellow bowling clubs; understands that a club member recently suffered a heart attack on the bowling green and was saved as a result of the efforts of fellow member Hugh McGoogan and visitor Andy Wardrope, using a defibrillator at a nearby community centre; notes that the club has undergone training for a number of its members to use the defibrillator in the event it is needed; acknowledges that the British Heart Foundation has found that there are more than 30,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests in the UK each year, and the use of a defibrillator significantly increases the survival rates of those who suffer a heart attack; applauds the club's efforts to encourage other local bowling clubs to also purchase a defibrillator to further improve the chance of survival for members of the local community in the event of a heart attack; encourages the further roll-out of defibrillators across the country; and wishes Ardeer Bowling Club in Stevenston, all the best for the future.
