Stem cell transplant policy

That this House notes that NHS England's current policy denies a second allogeneic stem cell transplant to blood cancer patients who relapse within 12 months of their first; further notes that this policy was introduced in 2017 and has not kept pace with advances in transplant medicine; expresses concern that patients who could benefit from a second transplant are left to fund treatment costing over £100,000 privately, meaning access depends on a patient's ability to fundraise rather than clinical need; commends Anthony Nolan, DKMS UK and Leukaemia UK for their joint campaign in raising awareness of this issue and giving a voice to those affected; welcomes the independent evidence review commissioned by NHS England into the case for a second allogeneic transplant; calls on the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care to ensure NHS England completes this review without delay and updates its policy so that transplant decisions are made by clinicians on the basis of individual clinical circumstances rather than a blanket time limit; and further calls on the Government to work with the devolved administrations in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales to ensure that any change in policy leads to equitable access to second stem cell transplants for patients across the whole of the UK.
