Publish a clear plan for restoring public trust & confidence. Public consent cannot be assumed it must be earned Policing by consent relies upon public trust, accountability, fairness, transparency, and the equal application of the law. Many members of the public now believe these principles are not being consistently upheld. Concerns include failures in accountability, unequal treatment, inadequate investigations, a lack of transparency, and the erosion of public trust between communities and police forces.

Introduce primary legislation governing police use of Live Facial Recognition

Police are deploying Live Facial Recognition without primary legislation, parliamentary debate or democratic mandate. This reverses the presumption of innocence. We call on Government to pause deployments and introduce proper legal safeguards now. Unlike CCTV, LFR processes every face, regardless of suspicion, reversing the presumption of innocence. The Biometrics and Surveillance Camera Commissioner confirms facial recognition “by definition compromises human rights” and urgently requires primary legislation with independent oversight. Without it, police forces write their own rules and future govts inherit unconstrained powers. Extraordinary state capability requires extraordinary democratic legitimacy before it becomes irreversible.

Conduct a review into the treatment of white people by the police

Funding for specialist police to tackle antisocial behaviour on illegal e-bikes

Funding to be made available to police forces to tackle illegal off road electric motorbikes and anti social behaviour. This funding could be used for specialist motorbike drone units designed to catch and prosecute those involved in the behaviours outlined above and make our communities safer. Most of us will have seen young people, wearing balaclavas to hide their identity, riding these bikes on our roads with total disregard for the law or our safety. However, specialist motorbike drone units will be able to track and follow the bikes, arrest the riders and, destroy their bikes. We believe this will be a strong deterrent.

Require police to preserve incident-linked body-worn video for 6 months

Legislate to require police to retain body-worn video footage linked to recorded police-public interactions for 6 months, with extension where a complaint, subject access request, disclosure request, safeguarding process or investigation arises. Body-worn video linked to police-public incidents can be deleted before people reasonably know it may be relevant. It may later be needed for complaints, subject access or disclosure requests, safeguarding, investigations or review of police conduct. A 6-month period, set by law or statutory guidance, would reduce premature deletion while still allowing routine, unrelated footage to be deleted sooner.

Review the National Police Chiefs Council's policy on escorting community events

The NPCC has created a policy which restricts police officers providing vehicular escorts to certain events, without considering the implications for local, long-standing events. The NPCC is governed by the Metropolitan Police so comes under the Home Office and therefore Parliament's jurisdiction. The Edinburgh Taxi Outing has been operating since 1947 to take children with special needs on a day out. Taxi drivers give up their time to decorate their taxis and a convoy of about 70 taxis go through Edinburgh, supported by Police Scotland's motorcycle unit. They monitor the junctions to allow the whole convoy to proceed as one unit. The new policy means we would need to sit in the normal congested traffic which would add about an hour to the journey making it challenging for the children

Create a national programme of police-led safety workshops for primary schools.

We ask the UK Government to create a nationally funded programme that works with police forces and schools to provide regular police-led workshops in schools for years 5 and 6 on online safety, gangs, drugs and alcohol, mental health, behaviour, future choices and transitioning to secondary school. Many primary schools have previously benefited from police-led workshops on online safety, gangs, drugs and alcohol, mental health, behaviour, future choices and preparing for secondary school. These visits can help children make informed decisions, stay safe and build positive relationships with trusted adults. However, many of these locally organised visits have stopped for the foreseeable future due to staffing, availability, and approval processes. We want a nationally funded programme so all children can access this support.

I call on the Government to review police response to anti-social behaviour in social housing & enforcement when tenants engage (but not limited to) threats, intimidation & repeated harmful behaviour. I believe there should be clearer limits on out-of-court disposals & faster action from the police No one should have to feel unsafe in their own home after reporting threats, intimidation or repeated anti-social behaviour. I believe that too often, victims face ongoing fear and disruption while authorities take time to act. Serious incidents may not result in formal prosecution despite strong supporting evidence, and housing action can be slow. In my view this leaves victims exposed to further incidents. I want stronger, more consistent action so victims are better protected and can feel safe in their homes again.

Review domestic abuse case handling by police and CPS

This should include case reviews if failings are suspected to have occurred, with recommendations for accountability for errors, and consideration of improved evidence handling and communication. We believe that repeated failures in domestic abuse cases, including poor evidence handling, delays and misinformation, show current systems are not working. In our view, these issues can continue even when raised, showing a lack of accountability. We think this risks undermining justice and causes victims to lose trust, and a review is needed to ensure accountability and prevent these failings continuing. This petition is informed by my own experience of the handling of a domestic abuse case.

Neurodiversity: Fund police training, review of police custody & data collection

Government to review treatment of neurodiverse individuals in police custody, and to introduce specialised training for police officers to better understand the needs of neurodivergent adults and young people in police custody for the purpose of reducing the risk of harm and preventable deaths. The review should consider the prevalence of neurodevelopmental conditions in police custody deaths, serious incidents and restraint cases. A review should also consider whether a mandatory recording of neurodevelopmental conditions in custody settings alongside standardised recording of ND conditions in IOPC reporting categories should be mandated. Training for police officers and custody staff should include recognition of associated behaviours in neurodiverse individuals under stress.

Ban the police from strip searching children and replace with doctor examination

Give the same support in law to police veterans as military veterans receive

Military veterans are afforded an enhanced status in law and greater provision of support in recognition of the trauma they may have suffered in conflicts as well as in recognition of the difficulty of leaving public service and adapting to life. We want police officers to be afforded the same. Evidence suggests that more police officers are retiring with ill health or choosing to leave the service because of health impacts caused by policing, such as police assaults, feeling under constant threat, and often dealing with death and injury. They suffer 600-800 traumatic events in a lifetime when the general public may suffer between 4-8. More officers are reporting PTSD/CPTSD as well as physical issues that prevent them from doing their job. We believe adapting to private life is proving difficult and help is needed.

Change the law cats being ran over be made illegal to not report to the police.

Would like the law to be the same when it comes to cats as in the same situation as a dog for it to be illegal to run over a cat and not report it to the police. Why should a cat be any different than a dog?? This will be someone’s family pet and this cannot continue happening with cats!!! Too many cats are being ran over in this modern era across the whole country, going missing and being found several days later. These incidents aren’t being reported to the police and the cats are being left in the areas where they have been hit and left deceased. Cats aren’t any different to dogs and the laws need to be made the same for cats now. Being a cat owner myself, this is so frustrating seeing so many going missing or at the side of the road.

Recently I wanted to attend my local police station to see a Constable, but it is closed. I needed to travel and have only been able to see a civilian who is not sworn to protect and serve me.

Make it mandatory for all police cars to use dashcam to ensure safety

Not all police cars are fitted with cameras, and we believe that this is a missed opportunity to collect evidence to support convictions and evidence gathering. We think it could also be helpful in cases where police have driven dangerously, and may make police drive better, give better coverage of any incidents that do happen and prevent mishaps.

Establish a new Independent Complaints Process for Serving Police Officers

Amend the Police Reform Act 2002 to create an independent complaints process for police officers which would allow them, whether victims, suspects, or whistleblowers, to raise concerns about their force without those matters being referred back internally. Officers often feel they cannot raise concerns independently, as complaints via the IOPC are often returned to the same force. This discourages reporting of misconduct, discrimination, or unlawful behaviour. Officers, whether victims or suspects must have fair access to independent review. Listening early to officers’ concerns can prevent harm, rather than reacting only after serious incidents or deaths. We believe mistreatment and lack of support has caused significant harm to officers and shows urgent need for change.

Allow police to take more measures when pursuing stolen motorcycles.

We want the police to be able to take more action when in pursuit of stolen motorcycles. This includes, but is not limited to, maneuvers that result in the thieves being knocked off the motorcycle. Currently police cannot attempt to pursue motorcycle thieves if the rider or riders pose a danger to themselves. We believe strongly that the thieves have decided that riding dangerously without the correct protective gear is their own choice and therefore and injury or deaths that occur are due to the thieves' own negligence and not the fault of the police. Motorcycle thefts are extremely common and this is partly because thieves know that the police won't be able to do anything against them.
