Reform VED to remove duplicate taxation and base it on road impact

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 21 March 2026

Reform Vehicle Excise Duty to remove vehicle value and emissions as factors, as these are already taxed via VAT and fuel duty. Replace with a fairer system based on vehicle weight, drive system and, where possible, road usage to better reflect real impact. As a petrol driver renewing my road tax, I believe VED is unfair and does not reflect real impact. My 1.7-tonne car driven 8,000 miles pays more than some heavier electric vehicles, for example a 2.7-tonne car doing 40,000 miles, despite causing less road wear. VED ignores mileage, weight and drive systems while taxing value and emissions covered by VAT and fuel duty. A fairer system based on usage and impact could help fund better roads instead of ones resembling the surface of the moon

Since 2021 personal tax allowance has been frozen at £12,570. This freeze was due to expire this year but the Chancellor of the Exchequer has extended it to 2031. We want to keep some more of our own money. If you are earning minimum wage then you may soon be paying tax because of fiscal drag. Abolish council tax and fund local councils from national taxation

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 8 February 2026

We call on the Government to abolish council tax and replace it with fair funding for local councils through national taxation, as we feel council tax has become unaffordable for many households during the cost of living crisis. Council tax is increasingly unaffordable during the cost of living crisis, especially for working households and private renters who we think receive little support. Bills rise regardless of income, and in some areas extreme increases can follow council financial mismanagement, which can unfairly shift the burden to residents. Council tax is regressive and generally does not reflect ability to pay. Local services should be funded through fair national taxation instead.
