Summary

That this House notes with alarm that we are facing an enduring and escalating affordability crisis, made worse by this summer’s record breaking and deadly heatwaves; further notes that this is only set to get worse this winter, with energy bills going up by over £270 from January and devastating flooding predicted; believes that the Autumn Budget should not be a business as usual affair but must be a Budget to make the UK affordable and to invest in our long-term climate resilience; further believes that over £60 billion could be raised to achieve these ends, by taxing the extreme wealth and profits of those with the broadest shoulders; supports measures to tax wealth fairly including bringing Capital Gains Tax in line with Income Tax, introducing National Insurance on investment income and an annual wealth tax on billionaires and multi-millionaires; further supports measures to introduce a tax on the huge windfall profits of banks; demands an end to all fossil fuel tax breaks and a permanent energy profits levy; also believes tax reliefs for data centres should be removed; and calls on the Treasury to introduce the above revenue raising measures to fund vital cost-of-living support on the 28th October.
