ACCURACY IN FOOD LABELLING

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 1 March 2000

after 'House', insert, 'while recognising the need to improve food labelling, notes with concern that the proposals contained in the honourable Member for Eddisbury's Food Labelling Bill contravenes the rules of the European Union single market, and if passed, would lay the UK government open to challenge the European Court of Justice; believes that just as it is wrong for France to flout EU law by banning British beef, it would be wrong for the UK to flout EU law with respect to food labelling; welcomes the new guidance for trading standards officers to crack down on imported products being sold as 'British'; supports the development by the National Farmers' Union and others of a single British produce kite-mark; and strongly endorses the Government's action to date on labelling and its commitment to make further progress at European Union level to improve food labelling with respect to country of origin and method of production.'.

LINK NETWORK CASH MACHINE CHARGES

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 1 March 2000

That this House is dismayed at the decision of LINK network members to allow banks to surcharge users of cash machines whatever amount they wish; is appalled that this decision ignores the recommendation in the Cruickshank Report that any such charges should reflect the cost of the service, which is less than 30 pence per transaction; and urges the Government to respond to this blatant example of commercial greed by immediately invoking the provisions of the Competition Act to protect the interests of the consumer, in particular those on low incomes and exposed to financial exclusion.

CARE HOMES

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 21 February 2000

That this House believes that national standards for care homes, as outlined in the Department of Health's consultation document, 'Fit for the Future', establishing a baseline below which no provider may operate, are vital to the elimination of current inconsistencies in the treatment of older people in such homes and that it is vital to ensure that the increasingly aged population will be treated with proper care, compassion, and respect; recognises that a portion of care homes may close because they cannot meet such standards, but notes that these standards set minimum requirements and are not new; and believes that to fail to implement such national standards is to continue to place older people in care homes in danger of abuse and neglect.
