Summary
We want the Government to introduce harsher penalties for vehicle theft—especially when filmed for social media—and reform self-defence laws so victims are not unfairly prosecuted for protecting their property from thieves. Motorcycle and e-bike theft is at epidemic levels in some regions, often driven by thieves stealing vehicles to brag about on social media. We believe current laws are failing as a deterrent, and due to a lack of police action, owners feel forced to protect their property. Shockingly, victims defending their livelihoods can often face harsher legal consequences than the thieves. We call for tougher sentences—especially if crimes are shared online—and reformed self-defence laws so owners aren't criminalized for protecting their vehicles.
