Summary

Commends the efforts of former South African President Nelson Mandela and others involved in the historic peace agreement for the Republic of Burundi that was signed in 2001 in Arusha, Tanzania. Calls on the President to significantly increase development and economic assistance to Burundi. Urges the President to work with Congress to lift restrictions imposed on Burundi after the 1996 coup and, acting through the Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), to establish a USAID mission there. Urges the international community to assist Burundi in its debt relief efforts, including through the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries Initiative.
