The law must be amended to implement the corresponding EU regulation, which has created a pan-European system for the protection of geographical indications for artisanal and industrial products. The regulation extends the logic of origin protection that has been applied to food and beverage products to other products as well, making it possible to protect the name, quality and traditional know-how related to the region throughout the European Union. In Estonia, the bill creates an opportunity to protect Muhu embroidery, Haapsalu, among others therapeutic mud, Setu pitsi, Saaremaa blacksmith works. The changes help preserve and promote regional skills, support local craftsmen and create and keep jobs in different regions of Europe.
