Summary

With the amendment of the Alcohol, Tobacco, Fuel and Electricity Excise Act, excise rates for electricity and certain fuels were lowered from May 1, 2020 to April 30, 2022. The purpose of lowering the rates was to alleviate the effects of the crisis caused by the spread of the COVID-19 virus on fuel consumers and to facilitate economic coping. Although the economy has recovered quickly, the pre-crisis level has not been reached in all sectors and inflation is accelerating given the conditions, it is not recommended to give an additional boost to the price increase. In this regard, the validity of the reduced rates will be extended by one year, so that the reduced excise duty rates will be valid until April 30, 2023. In addition, starting from May 1, 2023, a four-year gradual restoration of fuel and electricity excise duties to the pre-crisis level will be established. The latter gives both the private sector and the consumer time to adapt to the price increase.
