Summary
Euroopa Metsainstituudi eesmärk on edendada Euroopa metsade kaitset ja säästvat majandamist. Selleks uuritakse kogu Euroopa metsapoliitikat, metsade ökoloogiat, mitmekülgset kasutamist ja tervist ning puidu ja muude metsasaaduste ning -teenuste pakkumist ja nõudlust. Konventsiooniga ühinemine toetab teadmistepõhist metsanduspoliitika kujundamist. Lepinguosalised riigid on Euroopa Metsainstituudi liikmed. Euroopa Metsainstituut koondab enda alla ka assotsieerunud liikmete võrgustiku ja piirkondlikud bürood. Eesti Maaülikool sai assotsieerunud liikmeks 2003. aastal. Lisaks kuuluvad Euroopa Metsainstituuti ka toetajaliikmed väljaspool Euroopat asuvatest riikidest. Toetajaliikmed ei osale otsustusprotsessis. Euroopa Metsainstituudi konventsioon koostati 28. augustil 2003. aastal Soomes, Joensuus ning see jõustus rahvusvaheliselt 4. septembril 2005. aastal. 2017. detsembri seisuga on konventsioonil 28 lepinguosalist.
