Summary

By joining the Nagoya Protocol, Estonia contributes primarily to the protection of the world's biodiversity and to the fair distribution of the income from its use. Most of the world's natural diversity is located in developing countries. Domestic norms for the implementation of the protocol exist. Adoption of the Act on Accession is necessary because the protocol complements the Convention on Biological Diversity ratified by Estonia. Related to becoming a party to the Nagoya Protocol Mandatory expenditure for Estonia is a contribution to the main budget of the convention and participation in the meetings of the protocol parties. These costs are covered from the budget of the Ministry of the Environment. Today, the protocol has 105 participants. The European Union approved the protocol in 2014, Estonia adopted the corresponding legal norms with the Nature Protection Act that entered into force in 2017.
