Summary

The bill provides an opportunity to contribute up to ten active-duty troops to the international military operation Inherent Resolve in 2017. Estonia's participation in the mentioned operation began in August 2016, when a 6-member training team with a Danish contingent began serving in Anbar province, whose main task is the military training of the Iraqi security forces. In addition, since September 2016, one Estonian senior officer has been serving in the US-led Baghdad in a multinational military-strategic team that advises Iraqi ministries and security forces. The aim of the operation is direct and supportive military action against ISIL, primarily in Iraq and Syria. The Estonian Defense Forces do not participate in the activities that take place on the territory of Syria as part of the operation Inherent Resolve. The leading and supporting elements and staffs of the operation are also located in Bahrain, Cyprus, Egypt, in Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Qatar, Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Given the priority of the fight against ISIL, Estonia is ready to contribute to the operation additionally, for example with staff officers, if necessary and possible. The number of active servicemen to be additionally contributed would remain within the limit stipulated in the draft.
