Summary

The bill allows the contribution of up to three defense personnel to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mission. UNIFIL's mission is to prevent the outbreak of hostilities, support the Lebanese Armed Forces in southern Lebanon, and coordinate the activities of the Lebanese and Israeli governments in these matters. It is also UNIFIL's task to help ensure the availability of humanitarian aid to civilians and to support internally displaced persons voluntary and safe return home. Estonia participated in UNIFIL in 1996-1997, when it contributed a peacekeeping company (135 soldiers). From the spring of 2015 to the fall of 2018, Estonia contributed to UNIFIL with an infantry group and a support element - with a total of 38 soldiers - as part of the Finnish and Irish joint battalion. From the fall of 2018, Estonia contributes one staff officer to the mission headquarters in Naqoura. In 2020, Estonia will continue UNIFIL betting with up to three defense personnel.
