Summary

According to the bill, it will be possible to contribute up to 5 defense personnel to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization mission in Iraq in 2023. NATO's non-combat training and advisory mission (NATO Mission Iraq - NMI) was established in October 2018. The mission's activities are aimed at countering threats from the Alliance's south more broadly, helping Iraq build sustainable, transparent, inclusive and effective security structures to enhance their capabilities in the fight against terrorism, preventing the return of ISIL and stabilizing the country. To achieve this, NATO advises Iraqi security structures. NMI trains Iraqi security forces in close cooperation with the Iraqi government. NMI advises and conducts training, but does not participate in combat operations with Iraqi forces. Participation in the mission in Iraq gives Estonia the opportunity to actively contribute from the southern wing of the alliance in mitigating emerging threats, contribute to NATO's collective security and support allies and partner countries in the fight against terrorism.
