Summary

Ms. Marie Tamarelle-Verhaeghe draws the attention of the Minister of Solidarity and Health to the report commissioned from the National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety (ANSES) on the possible risks linked to the use of recycled rubber granulates in synthetic sports fields. According to the last census established in 2012, France had around 4,700 synthetic pitches, without count the “urban” 5-a-side football complexes, a figure which must today exceed 5,000 pitches. The advent of synthetic pitches is explained by a significantly lower maintenance cost than a grass pitch, despite the expensive installation. For communities, this is a long-term investment since a synthetic pitch would be 4 to 5 times cheaper to use, per hour of use. Doubts remain nevertheless on the dangerousness of styrene butadienne rubber (SBR) contained in the small rubber balls made of crushed tires which cover synthetic pitches by the tens of thousands. According to several American studies, synthetic pitches based on SBR contain an abnormally high hydrocarbon content, but also lead and nearly 190 harmful and potentially carcinogenic substances. SoFoot magazine was the first French media to relay these questions in a file dated November 2017. On February 22, 2018, the Government, through 6 ministries, contacted Anses about the possible risks linked to the use of recycled rubber aggregates, particularly in synthetic sports fields. The submission of the report, initially scheduled for the end of June 2018, has still not taken place. She would like to know the deadlines planned for submitting the report, and, in the event that the SBR is proven to be dangerous, the preventive measures it plans to take.
