Summary
Mr Ian Boucard draws the attention of the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs to the place reserved for the President of the Republic of Serbia during the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the armistice of the First World War. Indeed, the Serbian president was given a place outside the official platform reserved for heads of state during these commemorations, despite the crucial role that this country played during the Great War. In fact, this allied country saw 1.2 million of its children lose their lives, or nearly a third of its total population. It is also this country which, alongside our soldiers, won many crucial battles on the Eastern Front, allowing the final victory. Furthermore, the Serbian State has always honored our people and our nation as evidenced by the monument erected in Belgrade in recognition of France on which is engraved “We love France as it loved us 1914-1919”. A building referencing the universal values of the French Revolution: freedom, democracy and peace. It was in order to ensure the triumph of these values that the Serbian people fought alongside us during the First World War. Granting a place to its head of state in the tribune of honor seemed, in this respect, more than legitimate. In any state of cause, the place reserved for the Serbian president illustrates the ignorance of the common history that our two countries have and undermines our relations with this people very marked by the place reserved for their president. This is why he asks him what the President of the Republic intends to do to honor all the Serbian victims of the First World War and thus make up for this organizational fault.
