Summary
Ms Émilie Guerel draws the attention of the Minister of Agriculture and Food to the problem of stray cats in France. France today has more than 11 million stray cats, mainly due to abandonment. In fact, a single pair of cats could produce 20,746 offspring in four years if nothing hinders reproduction. According to article L. 211-27 of the rural and maritime fishing code, the mayor can have unidentified stray cats captured with a view to sterilizing and identifying them before releasing them in the place where they were captured. If the MP welcomes this system which allows municipalities to act in this area and provide an animal-friendly solution to the problems posed by an overpopulation of cats, it nevertheless appears difficult today to fight effectively against the spread of stray cats in France. Therefore, she would like to know the Government's position on the systematic sterilization of stray cats in public places.
