Summary
Mr. Joël Aviragnet draws the attention of the Minister of National Education and Youth to the future of the teaching of regional languages and in particular Occitan. In fact, the current baccalaureate system eliminates any interest in the Occitan option for the baccalaureate: the coefficient now weighs less than 1% of the final baccalaureate grade. The teaching of Latin and Greek were threatened in the same way, but a decree was published on December 31, 2018 to give them a more advantageous status. Currently, the modalities in place are in contradiction with the declarations of the President of the Republic made in Quimper on June 21, 2018: “Regional languages play their role in the roots which give the regions strength. We will perpetuate their teaching.” Furthermore, the commitments made by the State on the protection and promotion of the diversity of cultural expressions with UNESCO are not respected, just like the framework agreement for the development of the teaching of Occitan signed in 2017 in Toulouse in partnership with local authorities. Occitan is one of the founding elements of the specificity and rich heritage of the territories and the region. For more than 40 years, the doors of the Toulouse academy's educational establishments have been gradually opened to the teaching of Occitan within the framework of a remarkable continuity. Faced with the threat of a very brutal planned regression, the Regional Center of Occitan Teachers of Toulouse (CREO), the FELCO, the IEO, the Calandretas, the Convergéncia occitana and other Occitan associations are massively calling on all those who, attached like them to respecting the cultural and linguistic diversity of territories, to a proactive and ambitious policy for Occitan and its full development within the school. Also, he requests that a decree be quickly published aligning Occitan and regional languages with the more advantageous system that exists for Latin and Greek.
