Summary

Mr. Christophe Arend alerts the Minister of Agriculture and Food about breeding conditions in the poultry industry. Lack of natural light, malformations due to accelerated growth of animals and lack of space in cages, high density in farms, health and sanitary problems for the animals, the deplorable living conditions of chickens have been repeatedly denounced by protection associations animal. In addition to the associations, all French people now want an end to animal suffering. Today, nine out of ten French people consider it important to provide “dignified” living conditions for chickens (space, healthy air and access to the outdoors, clean living space). But, despite this ever-increasing awareness among citizens who are forcing manufacturers to change their behavior, we are witnessing a legal immobility on this issue in France and Europe. The regulations governing chicken farming do not meet any of these requirements. Only a joint European Parliament resolution proposal aimed at reducing the suffering of chickens on farms was adopted on October 22, 2018, but it remains largely insufficient. While the future of the planet depends on the quality of food and not the quantity and public opinion is mobilizing on these animal issues, he would like to know to what extent the Government intends to change the standards concerning the breeding of chickens (example: a maximum breeding density of 30kg/m2, with no possible derogation by limiting the backwash to a batch backwash) in order to alleviate the suffering of these animals and respond to a real citizen demand.
