Summary
Ms. Laurianne Rossi draws the attention of the Minister of Agriculture and Food to the composition of industrial foods marketed for pets, particularly dry kibble for dogs and cats. In 2018, France had 13.5 million cats and 7.3 million dogs; and the average annual budget devoted to these pets was 800 euros. In view of these data figures and the societal impact represented by the presence of a domestic animal in one in two French households, the state of health of domestic animals must be the subject of the attention of public authorities. However, several veterinarians are reporting an increase in the number of cases of diabetes and arthritis in dogs and cats. These pathologies, as well as numerous allergies and chronic skin infections, are believed to be linked to composition of dry kibble used to feed these animals. This alarming observation was shared by a number of citizens and led in 2018 to the creation of an association dealing specifically with this issue, “Toxic Croquette Alerts”. The latter had different brands of kibble analyzed in order to know the exact components. The overall results of these analyzes reveal frequent discrepancies between the information provided by kibble manufacturers and that provided to consumers concerning the actual composition of these products. This study thus supports the investigation carried out in 2016 by the Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Prevention which noted a high number of presentation anomalies or erroneous allegations. Another conclusion from these analyzes attests to high rates of carbohydrates and additives BHA (E320) and BHT (E321) in the composition of kibbles likely to be the cause of the increase in pathologies noted by veterinarians. In view of these elements which are particularly worrying for the health of these animals and the French households which own them, she asks what measures could be taken to strengthen the transparency of information relating to the composition of the kibbles and the fight against the harmfulness of some of them.
