Summary

Mr. François Jolivet draws the attention of the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs to the worrying difficulties encountered by Protestants and, more generally, Christians in Algeria in the exercise of their worship. In October 2019, three Protestant churches were sealed, including the largest in the country which accommodates more than 1,200 faithful. In less than two years, twelve Christian churches have been closed in Algeria. In recent days, seventeen Christians have been arrested for no apparent reason during peaceful demonstrations. Police violence during church closures has been reported by several independent media. Convictions of heavy fines for “proselytism” also seem to be increasing. Several thousand faithful are thus deprived of their freedom of worship. These are the fundamental principles of human rights. the Man who are called into question. Indeed, Algeria has committed to the international community to respect religious freedom as described by Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: “Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right implies the freedom to change one's religion or belief as well as the freedom to manifest one's religion or belief alone or in common, both in public and in private, through teaching, practices, worship and the performance of rites. In this context, he asks him to clarify whether the French Government is aware of this situation and, if so, to present the initiatives envisaged so that freedom of religion can be respected throughout Algerian territory.
