Summary

Article L. 113-1 of the Education Code provides that in infant classes or nursery schools, children under the age of three are included in the student population forecasts for the start of the school year both at national level and in academies. Because the inequalities that appear from a very young age can become lasting, in schools located in a disadvantaged social environment, whether in urban, rural or mountain areas and in overseas regions, schooling for children is possible (but not compulsory) from the age of 2. In non-priority sectors, these children can also be accommodated in nursery school if places are available and families request them.
