Summary
Mr. Jocelyn Dessigny draws the attention of the Minister Delegate to the Minister of the Armed Forces, responsible for memory and veterans, to the possibility of conferring the dignity of Marshal of France on Army General de Castelnau, posthumously. Although having had a leading role in the victory of the French armies, notably in 1914, General Édouard de Curières de Castelnau was the only one of the four members of the high command French during the Great War not to have been elevated to the dignity of Marshal of France. However, without his decisive victory at the Battle of Trouée de Charmes, the miracle of the Marne would not have been possible. Verdun would not have been saved any more without his decisions taken in the first hours of the attack. The dignity of marshal is conferred on general officers who have commanded victoriously in times of war. In the opinion unanimously by experts and historians, this was the case of Army General de Castelnau and the French Republic would be honored to give such a personality his rightful place in the collective memory. He invites it to establish a reflection on this subject involving the parties concerned (National Office of Combatants and War Victims, the Verdun Memorial, the National Union of Combatants, the Office of Educational Action and memorial information (BAPIM) and the direction of memory, culture and archives) and questions him about the possibility of conferring the dignity of Marshal of France on General de Castelnau.
