Summary
Ms. Marie-Pierre Rixain draws the attention of the Minister of Ecological Transition to the recycling of single-use masks. If the systematic wearing of masks becomes an essential means in the fight against the covid-19 epidemic which is currently affecting France, it is necessary to structure a real recycling sector for single-use masks (surgical type or FFP2) used daily by the French. In fact, we increasingly observes these masks littering city sidewalks even though they constitute potentially dangerous waste, in that they can be infected, and non-biodegradable, because they are made of polypropylene microfibers, a plastic material that is difficult to recycle. To treat this new source of waste, initiatives are currently underway in France such as in Avelin (North) where the company Cosmolys, specialized in the collection of infectious waste from professionals, has been testing a process since April 2019 to disinfect, sort and recover polypropylene, or in Châtellerault (Vienna) where the company Plaxtil decontaminates and recycles the masks it collects into plastic. A consortium bringing together doctors, industrialists and scientists from the CNRS, CEA, Inserm, Anses, and several universities and CHUs is working on different solutions to allow the reuse of single-use masks. That being said, these experiences remain marginal and alone do not make it possible to absorb the national consumption of these masks; especially since there is not yet a specific collection allowing a recycling sector to be structured. Also, she asks him about his ministry's road map to set up such a recycling sector. and thus generalize the few local companies on a national scale.
