Summary

The French authorities are fully aware of the difficulties raised by the differences in approach which can currently be observed between the different Member States of the European Union, with regard to the use of the term “probiotic” on the packaging of food supplements. The objective of this work is to define an approach which, on the one hand, will offer French consumers an adequate level of guarantee in terms of transparency and fairness of the information provided to them with regard to the characteristics of the products marketed and which on the other hand, will allow French companies which manufacture and sell supplements food, to fight on equal terms with their competitors on the internal market of the European Union, without being penalized by unfair competition. The French authorities are also continuing their dialogue with their European partners and the European Commission on this subject.
