Summary

Ms. Josette Manin alerts the Minister for Overseas Territories on the issue of sargassum seaweed, the stranding season of which is starting again on the Atlantic coast of the territories. This phenomenon, which began 10 years ago, continues to grow with daily health consequences that are particularly unbearable for those administered: skin irritations, inflammation of the mucous membranes, nausea and vomiting if the hydrogen sulphide released by the sargassum is inhaled in high concentrations or for a long period of time, the MP draws the Minister's attention to the lack of more in-depth scientific data concerning the effects of prolonged exposure to decomposing sargassum on the human body; negative economic consequences, particularly for tourism and boating, very important sectors for the Antilles; impacts on fishing with training anoxic zones causing the death of many species of fish; significant treatment costs for communities and the State. To date, despite some developments and a sargassum plan, the results of which are still awaited, it is necessary for Martinique to be able to apply the recommendations of the High Council of Public Health concerning: the census of people at risk during strandings; algae removal stranded daily and within 48 hours at most; the marking of stranding areas and the collection of algae in the open sea, with daily coastal collection in addition; or the training and prevention of the agents concerned. There are currently 13 municipalities affected by this scourge and it is necessary to put in place adequate measures before the situation worsens. She wants to know the news measures that the Government intends to put in place to support the municipalities impacted by this phenomenon.
