Summary
Ms. Huguette Tiegna questions the Minister of Solidarity and Health about the working conditions of midwives. Following a new strike which mobilized midwives in France, it is urgent to be concerned about their status and their demands. Regardless of where and how they perform their job, whether independent or salaried, nearly 40% of them face symptoms of professional burnout and 27% of students in the sector are thinking of ending their training, seven out of ten of whom mention depressive symptoms. Among the demands regarding the recognition of the profession from a salary and statutory point of view, she wishes to highlight two points in the exercise of their functions. On the one hand, midwives are subject to a list of limited prescriptions. As such, apart from monitoring within the framework pregnancy, the gynecological follow-up of a patient cannot be accompanied by a prescription. In this sense, for example, if the patient must use oral antibiotics, the midwife will not be able to prescribe them and requires the latter to contact her attending physician for the prescription. However, this point complicates access to care, especially in medical deserts. On the other hand, with regard to midwives who practice their private function, they cannot benefit from the advantages granted to their general practitioner counterparts who practice under the same status. Today, for example, midwives do not have the same benefits when they are on maternity leave and are disadvantaged by this situation. As such, she would like to know the measures planned for the recognition of the midwifery profession, particularly for those who practice their profession as a liberal.
