Summary

The reform of the baccalaureate and the general and technological high school will contribute to consolidating the economic culture of French high school students. A certain number of measures contribute to this objective: - in the second general and technological classes, economic and social sciences teaching is introduced into the common core of teaching at the rate of one and a half hours per week. This measure constitutes progress compared to the situation current since economic and social sciences, until then chosen only as optional exploration teaching, now become compulsory and a constituent part of the common culture of all high school students. - in first and final year classes, the objective is to prepare students for what will make them succeed in higher education. This results in more progressive courses without locking them into higher education. In this context, economic and social sciences can be chosen by students as a specialty course of 4 hours in first grade and 6 hours in final year. The new organization of teaching in the final cycle must allow diversified choices to complement this teaching. The association made possible of economic and social sciences with disciplines scientific disciplines such as mathematics or literary disciplines thus allows a diversification of courses according to the student's project thanks to the choice of three specialty courses in the first class and two courses of this type in the final year. For example, economics and social sciences can be linked to the specialty teaching of “history-geography, geopolitics and political sciences » in which teachers of economic and social sciences will be able to participate for the political science part. In addition, a 3-hour “Law and major issues in the contemporary world” (DGEMC) option can be chosen in the final year, which broadens the range of possibilities for students in terms of pursuing higher education. These changes in the structure of teaching are accompanied by a renovation of the program content, for which the Higher Program Council submitted its first recommendations at the beginning of May. Taking into account the developments described above, economic and social sciences have their place in the new organization of the baccalaureate and the general and technological high school.
