Summary
The World Health Organization estimates that depressive disorders represent the leading cause of morbidity and disability worldwide (March 2017 press release). Thus, there are more than 300 million people worldwide suffering from depression, an increase of more than 18% from 2005 to 2015. In France, the prevalence of depression is estimated at 7% (or nearly 4 million people aged 15 or over - European health survey EHIS-ESPS 2014), which places it in the European average. This condition is one of the most common, distressing and costly mental illnesses for society. 70 to 80% of depression can be cured with psychotherapy or antidepressant treatment, or a combination of both, depending on the severity of the depressive episode. Severity is classified into three levels: mild episode: it It is recommended to carry out supportive psychotherapy as first intention; moderate episode: supportive or structured psychotherapy should be considered as a priority. An antidepressant can be combined with psychotherapy; severe episode: it is generally recommended to initiate antidepressant treatment immediately and to combine it with psychotherapy. Research in psychiatry and mental health is one of the priorities of health research programs of the Ministry of Solidarity and Health (translational research, research on the performance of the healthcare system, hospital clinical research and research program in nursing and paramedical care, medico-economic research). University and public sector researchers are encouraged to come together in regional federations, coordinated by the Mental Health Research Federation of Hauts de France. Action research is also favored. Currently, two experiments are underway, which aim to treat mental disorders of mild to moderate intensity and to prevent their worsening, via the reimbursement of community psychotherapies. The first experiment concerns adults and the second young people aged 11 to 21. Both will be rigorously evaluated in order to draw recommendations for better care in community medicine. Finally, the prevention of depression involves the destigmatization of mental illnesses and the promotion of mental well-being, which are priority areas of the national mental health strategy. Priority actions include strengthening the psychosocial skills of people throughout life and training the general population in the first mental health relief.
