Summary

The high school reform project provides for the maintenance, from second to final year, of compulsory common teaching of two hours in physical and sports education (PES), as well as optional teaching of three hours. Thus, PE is the only discipline to be open under the same conditions, both in common and optional education, to all students of the general and technological high school.  Specialty courses are created in such a way as to offer, for each course, several options for further study to the students concerned. Specialized EPS would have mainly led to the STAPS sector, with few or no options for further study. This option would therefore complicate the assignment to higher education of high school students who choose EPS specialty education. Furthermore, the creation of an EPS specialty would destabilize the current system of school sports sections, which already aims to promote a high level of sporting practice. For these two reasons, it was chosen not to create specialty EPS teaching. As an optional education, PE remains a discipline that all general and technological high school students can choose until the final year, regardless of their career plans. This configuration will allow the EPS to remain accessible to as many people as possible. The reorganization of PE lessons will involve, if necessary, an evolution of the programs. The Higher Program Council, which was referred to by the minister, issued its first conclusions on this subject at the beginning of May, paving the way for modifications to programs and evaluation.
