Summary
The 2013 nomenclature of territorial statistical units (NUTS), a hierarchical system for dividing the economic territory of the European Union into 3 levels, was replaced by NUTS 2016, for all regional statistics collected by Eurostat, from January 1, 2018. The change introduced for France, by this revision, consists of classifying the new French regions at NUTS level 1. NUTS level 2 remains based on the old regions, and NUTS 3 level on the departments. NUTS 2 level is the one used for European policy to aid regional economic development. The National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) therefore disseminates to Eurostat the indicators used to manage this policy, that is to say, for each of the former regions, the gross domestic product (GDP) in value and volume, the GDP per capita and per employment, the added value of each branch. These main regional economic indicators continue to be available on the insee.fr site, within the scope of the former regions (https://www.insee.fr/fr/statistiques/1893220). They are, of course, also published on the perimeter of the new regions, the law of January 16, 2015 relating to the delimitation of regions leading INSEE to inform its users on the economic and social situation of the regions in their outline, as of January 1, 2016. INSEE also provides a cartographic tool allowing the calculation of local statistics on any type of territory, ranging from the municipality to the whole of France; it is thus possible to define, as a territory, a former region by aggregating the departments that constitute it (https://statistiques-locales.insee.fr/#c=home). INSEE strives, in fact, to provide all users with the most complete possible data comparable over time.
