Summary

While it provides approximately 10% of passenger and freight traffic in France, rail transport represents only 1.6% of national energy consumption and emits less than 1% (0.4%) of greenhouse gas emissions linked to transport. In fact, more than 80% of rail traffic is carried out using electrical energy. In order to participate in achieving the objective set by the Government, and affirmed in the climate plan presented on July 6, 2017, aiming to achieve “carbon neutrality in 2050”, a mission was entrusted to Mr. MP Benoît Simian, relating to the “greening” of the residual part of the fleet of railway rolling stock running on diesel.
