Summary
On the basis of the decree of February 1, 2011 relating to the professions of prosthetist and orthotist for the fitting of disabled people, a letter from the Ministry of Health was sent to the president of the national union of French orthopedics on December 6, 2016 in order to confirm that “service providers and equipment distributors can sell standard orthotics only if they employ a professional health authorized to issue them. This may be, for example, an orthopedist-orthotist, an orthoprosthetist or a qualified pharmacist.” However, faced with the difficulties of applying these regulations, Health Insurance has established, for around ten years, a moratorium in order to reimburse standard orthotics sold by other professionals working in the field of health. Work has been undertaken with all of the professionals concerned, the Health Insurance services, the Economic Committee for Health Products and the ministry, for several months, to seek a consensus with a view to putting an end to the moratorium put in place. Discussions are currently still ongoing between the partners involved in order to reach an agreement.
