   L'italien est enseigné par un peu moins de 2 000 enseignants (soit 0,5 % des effectifs enseignants du second degré public) affectés, pour la moitié d'entre eux, dans les académies proches de l'Italie (académies de Grenoble, de Nice, d'Aix-Marseille et de Lyon). Sur la période 2010-2023, les moyens d'enseignement alloués dans la discipline, tout comme le nombre d'enseignants dans le second degré, ont augmenté d'environ 5 %. Sur la période 2022-2025, la part des postes ouverts aux concours en italien (agrégation externe et interne, CAPES externe, interne et 3e voie), représente en moyenne 0,5 % des postes offerts, ce qui correspond au poids de la discipline dans la population enseignante dans le second degré. Ainsi, après une augmentation de 7 postes supplémentaires proposés à la session 2022, le volume de postes ouverts au concours est resté stable sur cette même période (40 nominations en 2021, 47 en 2022, 48 en 2023, 49 en 2024 et 53 en 2025 en intégrant les lauréats appelés sur listes complémentaires). La politique de recrutement des enseignants du second degré public fait l'objet d'une évaluation prévisionnelle chaque année. À cet effet, il est actuellement prévu pour la session 2026 une ouverture de l'agrégation et du CAPES aussi bien en interne qu'en externe. La volumétrie de chaque concours communiquée de manière prévisionnelle sur le site " Devenir enseignant" fait apparaître 22 postes au CAPES externe (comme en 2025) et 12 postes au CAPES interne (contre 10 en 2025).
