Summary

The Ministry of Solidarity and Health has been increasingly contacted, for several years, by patients in particular, on the subject of therapeutic cannabis. In this context, a referral was sent to the National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM) in order to have a complete inventory of the scientific knowledge available on: - pharmaceutical specialties containing extracts from the cannabis plant or synthetic cannabinoid analogues; - the therapeutic effects but also the risks linked to direct use of the plant. Thus, the ANSM created a temporary specialized scientific committee (CSST) composed in particular of doctors specializing in general medicine, psychiatry, neurology, oncology, infectious diseases and therapeutics. The CSST issued its first conclusions on the relevance of the use of cannabis (plant) for therapeutic purposes in December 2018. The ANSM indicated that it subscribed to these initial conclusions and in particular to the therapeutic situations that could potentially benefit from treatment with cannabis, but also to the need for monitoring of treated patients in the form of a national register. The CSST continues its work, particularly on the modalities of a possible implementation of cannabis therapeutic (in plant form). The ministry is carefully monitoring the progress of this work and will be particularly vigilant to ensure that any developments in this area are favorable to patients and public health.
