Summary

The agreement establishes the conditions for the country's accession to the European Economic Area. The European Economic Area (EEA) unites the member states of the European Union and the countries of the European Free Trade Area (EFTA) into an internal market operating according to common basic rules. These rules ensure the free movement of goods, services, capital and persons in the EEA in an open and competitive environment. Today, EFTA includes Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland. Switzerland does not however, due to the negative result of the referendum, it is part of the EEA and bilateral agreements regulate the relationship between Switzerland and the EU. On the basis of the EEA Agreement, the EFTA countries can participate in the internal market of the European Union, while maintaining independence from the common agricultural and fisheries policy of the European Union. According to the EEA Agreement, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway are subject to the entire European Union legislation in the areas covered by the EEA Agreement. EEA Agreement 27 EU member states and Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein are currently involved. On July 1, 2013, Croatia became the 28th member state of the European Union. The need to conclude an EEA enlargement agreement stems from Croatia's accession agreement with the European Union, which was signed on December 9, 2012, and Article 128 of the EEA Agreement, according to which each European country that becomes a member of the European Union must apply to become a party to the agreement.
