Summary
Mr. Peio Dufau draws the attention of the Minister of Culture to the future of the very first book printed in the Basque language, “Linguae Vasconum primitae” written by Bernat Etxepare and published in 1545. This founding work, which begins with the words “The Basque language is worthy, as much as any other, of being written”, constitutes a treasure of the linguistic and literary heritage of the Basque Country. Composed of 28 leaves of poems, this rare book has has survived the centuries while benefiting from remarkable conservation. It is currently on loan from the National Library of France to the Basque Museum in Bayonne, where it is on display until January 11, 2026. Given its heritage, symbolic and cultural value for the inhabitants of the Basque Country as well as its place in the history of the Basque language and the deep attachment of the population to this unique work, he asks to study the conditions to maintain it in the Basque Country beyond the exhibition period. Furthermore, the MP wishes to underline the living nature of Basque culture and language. Its transmission depends both on the visibility of its founding works, but also on the means allocated to creation. While the State has just reduced the budget allocated to the Basque Cultural Institute, it alerts it to the weakening of the Basque cultural ecosystem. However, it is at the heart of the effective exercise of cultural rights and remains an essential pillar of social ties and popular creation.
