   A la suite de la crise sanitaire de 2020, qui a exacerbé les inégalités sociales et particulièrement les inégalités d'accès à l'école, le Gouvernement a financé le recrutement de 30 médiateurs scolaires (1,2M€ par an) dès la rentrée scolaire de septembre 2020, dans le cadre des actions de résorption des bidonvilles. Ce programme de médiation scolaire se traduit par des actions "d'aller-vers" les familles avec pour objectifs de sensibiliser à la scolarisation en établissement, d'aider aux démarches d'inscription, de contribuer à lever les freins matériels (cantine, transports…) et les réticences construites sur des traumatismes hérités ainsi que de soutenir la parentalité dans le développement de la persévérance scolaire des enfants. En 2025, un effort budgétaire a été réalisé pour assurer le financement de 10 postes de médiateurs supplémentaires. Compte tenu des résultats probants de cette expérimentation, qui a généré un effet de levier significatif sur la scolarisation des enfants vivant en bidonvilles, le ministère de la Ville et du housing a engagé, en 2025, le déploiement d'un dispositif analogue à destination des enfants issus de familles itinérantes et de voyageurs, prévoyant le financement de dix postes de médiateurs répartis sur cinq départements, à hauteur de 500 000 € par an.
