Summary
Methylphenidate is indicated in children for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This treatment is accompanied by adverse cardiac, neuro-psychological and cardiovascular effects during long-term use for an effectiveness sometimes considered modest on the symptoms of hyperactivity, quality of life and school behavior. The report “Methylphenidate: usage data and safety of use in France", published in 2017 by the National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM), mentions on pages 10 and 11 that the use of methylphenidate in France remained low in relation to the prevalence of the disease and much lower than that observed in other European countries including the United Kingdom, Norway, Sweden and Denmark. The consumption of methylphenidate is very regulated in France. It is nevertheless growing. Under these conditions and aware of the concerns that persist about the health of children treated long-term and the increasing use of this treatment, the Minister of Solidarity and Health requests the ANSM to have an updated inventory and the actions implemented.
