Mr. Stéphane Demilly questions the Minister of Solidarity and Health on medical demography and the explosion of delays in obtaining an appointment with a general practitioner or specialist. While more than 2.5 million French people already live in one of the 192 medical deserts in France, the phenomenon tends to get worse and no longer only concerns small towns. It extends to cities, notably due to departures in retirement not replaced. Between 2012 and 2017 the average waiting times to obtain an appointment in the city literally exploded from 104 to 117 days for an ophthalmologist, from 55 to 68 for a gynecologist, from 41 to 64 for a dermatologist, from 38 to 53 for a cardiologist, from 36 to 51 for a rheumatologist or even from 33 to 43 days for an ENT specialist. These unbearable waiting times have thus become the first cause of renunciation cared for by French people. Furthermore, 47% of general practitioners are over 55 years old, and 27.3% are over 60 years old compared to only 16% are under 40 years old. Specialist doctors are on average 51 years old in France, 27.6% are over 60 while barely 20% are under 40. The arrival of newly trained doctors will therefore not make it possible to compensate for future retirements or to cope with the increase in needs linked to the aging of the population.
