Summary
By 2030, people aged 75 and over will increase from 6 to 8.4 million in France. However, sensory disorders increase with age and if they are insufficiently corrected, they contribute to compromising the maintenance of the autonomy of older people. Indeed, visual disturbances influence balance and increase the risk of falls. They can further contribute to elderly isolation and depression. Opticians and eyewear makers, who fall under the medical auxiliaries of the public health code, are part with ophthalmologists and orthoptists of the visual health sector which revolves around these three health professions, with specific skills to provide care concerning eye pathologies. In order to improve access to care for people in accommodation establishments for dependent elderly people (EHPAD) who cannot always travel, Law No. 2019-72 of February 5, 2019 aimed at improving the visual health of elderly people losing their autonomy plans to set up an experiment in EHPADs in particular, allowing opticians-eyewear manufacturers to carry out a refraction examination and an adaptation, as part of a renewal of initial medical prescriptions for corrective glasses and eye contact lenses. A Evaluation of this experiment will be carried out, within a framework defined by law, in order, if necessary, to perpetuate and extend this measure. A decree, pending publication, will set the conditions for application of this law, in particular the modalities for carrying out the examination of refraction with a view to adaptation in these establishments, and an order must define the experimental regions, up to four.
