Summary

Mr. Xavier Breton draws the attention of the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs to the deterioration of the situation of Christians in Algeria. Three new Protestant churches have just been sealed, including the largest in the country which accommodates 1,200 faithful. This brings to twelve the number of Protestant places of worship closed by the authorities in less than two years. A thirteenth church has just been ordered to close. THE Algerian authorities have initiated inspection visits to all churches. These committees notably ask churches for their approval recognizing them as places of worship. However, these approvals are never provided by the competent commission. Several thousand faithful have thus found themselves deprived of their place of worship since the end of 2017. Added to this are regular summons of church leaders to the police station or in front of the judge leading to heavy fines for “proselytism”. Christians are calling on the authorities to guarantee fundamental rights, in particular the right of association and the right to gather for worship. This is why he wants to know the Government's position.
