Summary
The profession of orthopedist-orthotist is one of the 5 so-called fitting professions necessary for people with disabilities alongside orthoprosthetists, podorthotists, ocularists and epithetists. It is recognized as a health profession and regulated by the public health code. The skill of diagnosing and analyzing disorders falls within the role of the doctor, so these professionals cannot carry out the fittings only on medical prescription. Since the law of January 26, 2016 relating to the modernization of our health system, chiropodists-podiatrists are authorized to renew and adapt initial medical prescriptions for foot orthotics dated less than three years ago, unless the doctor objects. Health insurance now covers these renewals. Although chiropodist-podiatrists represent the majority of health professionals whose vocation is to renew foot orthoses, other professions with equivalent skills in the field of fitting claim the same possibility. The Government is currently considering giving orthopedic surgeons-orthotists the right to renew prescriptions, in the same way as chiropodists-podiatrists.
