Summary
Mr. Hubert Brigand draws the attention of the Minister of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty to the means available to breeders to protect their herds against attacks by predators, particularly wolves. Indeed, in addition to suitable fences, some breeders use protection dogs - patous - or plan to do so. However, in advisory mission report no. 23029 of July 2023, the General Council for Food, Agriculture and Rural Areas (CGAAER) certainly recognized the effectiveness of the use of protection dogs, but also noted problems of cohabitation with other users of livestock areas or their neighbors (risk of bites if dogs feel threatened, noise pollution linked to barking, etc.). The CGAAER thus concluded that the structuring and organization of the sector are essential to limit legal risks and to strengthen the acceptability of this technique of protection against predation. This is why he asks him to please indicate how the Government intends to help breeders protect their herds by using, if they wish, protection dogs.
