Summary
The report and opinion of the National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety (ANSES) relating to the expertise on “electromagnetic hypersensitivity (EHS) or idiopathic environmental intolerance attributed to electromagnetic fields (IEI-CEM)” were published on March 26, 2018. The expertise carried out constitutes a large-scale literature review, work supplemented by hearings. The analysis of the studies led the agency to conclude that “in the current state of knowledge, there is no solid experimental evidence to establish a causal link between exposure to electromagnetic fields and the symptoms described by people declaring themselves electro-hypersensitive. » Among the research hypotheses analyzed by the agency to interpret people's symptoms, none could be retained as convincing. Since 2011, ANSES has launched a research program on the impact of radio frequencies on health. As part of this call for research projects, around ten research projects focused on electro-hypersensitivity. The people concerned find themselves, for a large part of them, in a state of physical or psychological suffering, more or less significant. ANSES particularly highlights medical wandering which characterizes the journey of these people and makes recommendations on their care. In accordance with article 8 of Law No. 2015-136 of February 9, 2015 relating to sobriety, transparency, information and consultation regarding exposure to electromagnetic waves, the Government will examine the follow-up to be given to these recommendations and will submit to Parliament a report on electro-hypersensitivity which will specify the measures concerning the care of people indicating that they are hypersensitive to electromagnetic waves. Finally, as part of the ANSES assessment, the experts indicated that there is no scientific data to demonstrate the effectiveness of white zones or “whitened” buildings, nor of specific hospital rooms, on the reduction of symptoms reported by people declaring themselves electro-hypersensitive.
