Summary

Mr. Éric Pauget draws the attention of the Minister of Higher Education, Research and Innovation to the national strategy in favor of artificial intelligence (AI) and to the directions defined in this area. The President of the Republic announced a plan aimed at developing artificial intelligence until 2022. The State will devote 1.5 billion euros to it. France certainly has all the assets, talents and training to fully exist in this sector. However, the country currently lacks groups with leadership and visibility in this economically very promising sector, particularly with regard to innovative and disruptive projects. In the Alpes-Maritimes department, the Sophia-Antipolis center, the first European technopolis which will celebrate its fifty years of existence, attracts the best researchers in the world and testifies to the dynamism of a territory. It was recently designated to host one of four interdisciplinary artificial intelligence institutes. This choice of Sophia-Antipolis is linked to its excellence in training and research, as well as the strong impetus given in this department in favor of the construction of an artificial intelligence ecosystem. However, faced with competition in particular from China and United States, France lacks, to date, groups with international leadership and visibility in this economically very promising sector, particularly with regard to innovative and disruptive projects. He believes that the realization of this ambition requires better consultation between member countries of the European Union and the creation of solid bridges between the world of AI research and that of industry. Also, he asks him if the Government intends to quickly implement measures promoting the emergence in France of this international leadership.
