Seek legally binding international rules on military AI and autonomous weapons

United Kingdom · UK Parliament · 24 September 2026

From Ukraine to Gaza to Iran, AI-powered weapons are increasingly making life-and-death decisions. In November, the UN will decide whether to begin negotiations on new weapons rules. The UK must support a legally binding treaty and ensure meaningful human control over every use of force. Autonomous weapons systems can identify and engage targets with limited or no human intervention. As AI becomes increasingly integrated into military decision-making, the risk of machines being given greater control over life-and-death decisions is growing. In November, states will meet at the UN in Geneva to consider whether to begin negotiations on new international rules for autonomous weapons. The UK must join the global push to control military AI and autonomous weapons.
